WEST BEACH VISITOR - c1996

Only moored up

By Laurie Stonehouse

A strange sight at the West Beach around ten years ago.

Was it repairing the west beach wall?

No, it was just moored up because there wasn't anywhere else other than the West Beach that could berth such big structure.

This was the "Jack up barge " called the Katja.
Very useful piece of equipment. In fact when two Newhaven trawlers mysteriously sank at their berths, I believe it was this jack up barge that lifted them from the bottom of the harbour.

I moved to Newhaven in Dec 1997 and remember this being here just after that. Could it have returned?

Possibly, but that spot has been used by several such barges over the years. Andy-Editor
