DENTON TERRACE / RAILWAY INN

The following photograph shows Denton Terrace, and the Railway Inn just before their demise in 1972.  These buildings were demolished to make way for the new approach road that was to serve the new swing bridge that opened in 1974, and the flyover which was constructed during 1976.

Can't think why I remember this but did someone who was known as 'Darky' Knight live in the end house shown in the picture ? I seem to remember going there with a friend of mine who was related to him, maybe his Uncle or Grandfather. My friends name was Geoff Corlett, his Mother's name was Pauline and his Dad was known as 'Snowy' who used to work on the 'Brighton' Mail Boat in the 50's. Can anyone confirm this ?

Yes Darkie's family did live there and were true old Newhaveners, lovely people. I think Darkie and his younger brother Pete are still in the area.

I was born in Number 2 Denton Terrace. The Knight's lived at No 1 and the Bronston's at No 3. I lived there until the Terrace was demolished in 1972. The houses were old and cold but I still miss the place even today. I think of it almost every time I pass over the flyover. Happy Days... Steve

My sister's friend Val Moody lived in Denton Terrace in the sixties, as did Vic Sexton, wonder where they are now?

Dont know what happened to the Moody's, but Vic is my brother and he still lives in Newfield Road.

Worked on them old houses many a time and had a few beers at the Railway. Nowadays, Darkie can often be found at the West Beach car park talking to John, usually about "Old Newhaven". I think that most of old Newhaveners and mariners do, including myself when I am in the area. Thanks John, for keeping me up to date with the local gossip and the loan of the local newspapers. I think Darkie told me he was also a contributer of this brilliant website.

I was a school friend of Val Moody and I think your sister's name is Anita who I used to be a school friend also. We had a school reunion when we where all 50 but Val was not there.

I think Denton Terrace was owned by the railway. It was one of the first jobs I had to arrange when I joined them. I used to have the name plaque off the wall until it got lost in a house fire.
