MOTOR FISHING VESSEL (M.F.V.) YACHT DECK RE-CAULKING

1990

By Chris Young

The pictures show the finished effect following whole deck re-caulking operation and final sanding off, to complete. Following this work the vessel went to Sweden for a period.
This work was carried out via the marine workshop facility.

Nice crisp clear pictures, the first one could almost have been taken on the French Riviera !

BUT what was the NAME of the MFV, and was it NN registered and resident here? But more to the point & for the information of those readers who do not have "boating" interests, exactly what is re-caulking, how is it done and why?

The vessel's name now escapes me as these works were carried out eighteen years ago, but I do know that she was not registered to Newhaven, but was an MFV Yacht which had moved from Brighton Marina to the Newhaven Marina workshops which was trading at the time as RSM Marine Workshops under a Tenancy agreement.

We had to remove all the old caulking cotton from between the deck seams then re caulk with new cotton prior to sealing with a PRC sealant to repay and close off the caulking cotton. Then once the sealant has completely cured, the whole deck is sanded off flush which leaves the finish indicated in the photos.

She was privately owned and maintained and was used as a working home base for her owner both when in the UK or on continental locations etc.

The old grey matter has not completely failed me as on closer scrutiny the side photo, shows the name board and vessels name 'KYTRA' which I can now recall.  Deck was recaulked due to leaking areas at various locations hence the work being carried out.

Another great story Chris, keep them coming!  Good to see the marina nice and full and that the sun was shining...
