East quay visitors

By Laurie Stonehouse

The following photographs show a selection of Cargo ships, and a rather posh visitor from the 1990's.  Until a few years ago, these ships were a common sight along the East quay, with goods ranging from tropical fruits to Timber being  unloaded at the Fishers Terminal.   Sadly, this era has now passed and only a scrap metal company is operating from the East Quay.

Those were the days!
The little mini-cruise liner was one of several identical sisters that used to call in. Their names changed a few times but I recall the two regulars as Renaissance Seven and Renaissance Eight. Then, Renaissance Cruises went under (I'm sure I could have put that better!) and we saw them no more, but they are still operating with new owners.

Nice selection of ships which used to visit 'Fishers Terminal' at south end of East quay area, when one of the Blue Star ships used to call they always looked very impressive being in very good condition generally, the last one I recall was the 'Scottish Star' which was one of the more modern design which was replacing the older passenger / cargo style of say 'Argentina Star' which features in another article on this site.
