This photo must have been taken after the war. The shops shown above the Westminster Bank were rebuilt after the war. The previous ones having been bombed.

Denton Island bridge was part of my remit as a structures examiner with British Rail. If you look at the brick pier of the bridge, you will notice two things, (i) a white chalk mark placed by me indicating a severe crack in the brickwork, and (ii) just above the water line a "strap" consisting of old rails holding the brickwork together. This work was carried out in the 1970's and the general poor condition of the brickwork on both piers and also the metalwork of the wrought iron bridge led to a 12Ton weight restriction being placed on the bridge which subsequently led to its replacement with the present day structure. For another picture showing the poor condition of the old bridge see my page entitled :- OLD BRIDGES - The Swing Bridge & the bridge to Denton Island
