FEAST, FUN AND FIREWORKS. EXCERPT FROM A LOCAL PAPER 1945

Children & old folks entertained at Newhaven. 25/05/1945

Nearly £10 was collected from residents of St Lukes Lane, Lewes Place, Providence Place and Essex Place, for a victory tea provided for their 48 children last Saturday. All the mothers helped and afterwards sat down for tea to be waited on by the fathers, then they themselves waited on their husbands. Ices and Toffees were enjoyed by the kiddies as well as a fine tea.

Mr G L R LAPIERRE made a short speech and presented 100 cigarettes on behalf of the gathering to Sapper A W JORDAN of 40 St Lukes Lane recently home from a P.O.W. camp.

The tea was organised by Mrs A Arnold - Mrs Goulden - and Mr A Mayo.

Mr Arnold gave the money and prizes for games and dancing which followed at the Shakespeare Hall.

Each child was given 2 shillings and a bag of chips on leaving the hall.

All the food left over was given to the inmates from the old lodging house who are now living in Providence Place.
