PARSON'S CORNER

Newhaven Town Centre

This was a fresh fruit and veg shop, much of which came from the London markets. The produce was mainly displayed outside on the street to attract customers.  The Parson family were known as a good hard working one. There was a good function room above the shop.  Parson's Corner is now the site of a taxi office.

I regularly shopped here for my fruit and veg and the staff were always very helpful. If I returned home and found that I have some bruised fruit, then they would always replace it.
Does anyone else have any memories of this shop or other shops in Newhaven?

I met my husband Andrew Gibbs when we both worked part-time in Parsons in 1979. We worked with Ken and Sis Parsons, Dot Parsons, Adam Poulton, Peggy Pearson and Jean Woolgar. Andrew worked there full-time when he left school for a while and made deliveries with Ken and sometimes ran the shop for him. We have now been married 23 years and have 2 children.

My son, Craig McIntyre, remembers being caught "taking" some fruit from the front display by Ken Parsons. He was about five at the time and has thanked Ken ever since for catching him as it taught him a sharp lesson. Craig is now a Staff Sergeant in the 9th/12th Lancers and has served two terms in Iraq.

The 'function room' upstairs became Jean Cantell's Studio Tempo Dance School.

I worked at Parsons part-time for about a year in 1978/79. I remember Andrew, Sis, Dot and Peggy, also the lovely cream cakes Ken Parsons used to buy for all the staff on a saturday morning!

I remember working with Andy in the late 70s early 80s, Ken was great to work for, and the Belgian buns on a Saturday morning were great.
