Shown in an old Parish Magazine

Does anyone know roughly when these businesses were open?-I don't think any of them remain open now

Does anyone have any memories of them?

My husband was a stoker at the Downs Laundry in the 1970's/80's. Arthur Mitchell, anyone remember him? Much later it became Anglican I think, now a block of flats.

Pam's Cafe used to be part of a parade of shops at the beginning of Elphick Road.  This was demolished to make way for the Ring Road. The cafe was a bikers cafe and had a bit of a reputation I remember!

There was an Arthur Mitchell in my class at school. He lived in South Road and his younger brother was George Mitchell. We all used to play together with "Tiger" Holden and Ron Smith in Huggets Field. It was a paradise playground then, with huge mounds of sand covering up massive fuel tanks.
