Newhaven 1917

By Ian Everest

Newhaven Town War Memorial has the names of 127 men who lost their lives during the Great War. According to records available at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) we can be sure that 36 Newhaven men were killed in action or died of wounds during 1917. Records of individual men do not always give full details and verifying any others who were killed during 1917 would require further research using other sources. For the purposes of this account, the names of those who are listed by the CWGC are included. If there are any individual details missing, then it is because it is not included in the record:

My wife, Jacqueline, (nee Kennard) had a great Uncle, Albert Kennard. He was killed in 1917 at Arras. He received the Military Medal for bravery and is on the Newhaven Memorial. He is also memorialised in Bishopstone Church inside the foyer. He lived with his Father in Tidemills.

I do not believe that J.G.Norster is the John you have mentioned. John Norster did die under the circumstances mentioned, and is buried where you say, (the details would be from the CWGC website) but he did not have a middle name. He is also commemorated on the Gosport memorial, where he and his parents lived. The J G Norster whom I think is commemorated here is Jonas Godfrey Norster who died on The Duchess in Newhaven Harbour on 1st July 1917. His details are not on the CWGC website (I don't know why not).
