I live in Canada, close to a Royal Canadian Legion and know many current and ex-serving members of the Canadian Military. It still amazes me that they know nothing about our (Newhaven's) memorial and annual remembrance of what is such an important part of their history, and yet when I talk to the veterans and mention that I come from Newhaven I see the recognition in their eyes. In a roundabout way it is because of the Canadians and this raid that I ended up in Canada. A sister of my fathers' sister-in-law (bear with me here) married a Canadian Tank driver who she met in Newhaven and subsequently came to Canada as a war bride. Her sister (my fathers' sister-in-law) emigrated with my uncle during the 50's, another two uncles followed over the next 20 years and I came over in the early 90's with my parents finally retiring here, although they have since moved back to England.

I too live in Canada, in New Brunswick. I was in Newhaven in 2001 and took many photos of the memorial parade which I gave to the local (Campbellton) Legion. It is interesting that they also have a plaque on display from the Shoreham-by-Sea Legion. Many of the veterans served in the New Brunswick North Shore Regiments and were staioned in the Brighton area and speak highly of the kindness shown by the local people. They are very aware of the ill fated raid on Dieppe and it is often the topic over a few lunchtime beers. Regards
