Postcard from the G Amy collection

The following photograph is of Lewes Road looking north, the shop on the corner of Lewes Road and Ship Street was in recent years known as "Woody's" a small convenience store which ceased trading some time ago.

At some point in time possibly in the 1950's, it has been suggested that this premises was called the "Silver Horseshoe" this image indicates that there was a printers here in the 1930's called "Hodgson Printing Works".

I lived just over the road from 1952 until 1967. It was a shop known as "The Café" for all that time as I remember. The couple that ran it opened every day of the year from early until late in a time when that was almost unheard of. I seem to remember the man had a foreign accent and was well liked.
