I worked with Ben in the 60s, he was a bricklayer with Oxley & Bennett. I remember him as a comical chap and he was always smiling. I think he lived in Beresford Road and built an house next door to his for his son. He also kept bees. At this time, Ben used to drive a Ford "Sit up and beg" type Pop. I asked him one day why he driving on the white line, he said he did that so he did't hit the kerb. That was Ben.

Hello Colin, Ben was my Grandfather, you're correct he did live in Beresford Rd and the 'house next door' is where my Mother (Ben's daughter-in-law) still lives. I remember the bees very well! It's nice to hear someone's memories about him as he died when I was only nine. My enduring memory of him is with his motor-mower cutting the grass in the summer wearing his straw hat.

Was Robert Young late of Norman Road Newhaven a relative of yours?
