NEWHAVEN MARITIME MUSEUM

Behind the scenes in December 2003

By Jackie Blackwell

These pictures were taken of me and some of my pupils during my time training to be a teacher in 2003 when I did a placement at Denton Junior School.  I used to see the museum every day on my way to the school and suggested that I organised a visit with my year 6/7 pupils. As we were studying the theme of the Victorians,  I put together a museum trail to discover some of the artifacts, with assistance from curator Peter Bailey, to keep them busy... I wonder if the museum still has it?

Despite being rather nervous as the teacher in charge of a group of 10 and 11 year olds, I had been really pleased with the visit and I hope that at least some of the children have returned since then.

The museum is a wonderful collection of photos and memorabilia about Newhaven and I had been amazed that none of the pupils had ever visited before.  There was a really magical moment when one of the pupils recognised his grandfather (who had died) in one of the photographs of Newhaven's fishermen.

The museum is located at Paradise Park, Avis Road in Newhaven.

Peter Bailey Hi Peter! You may remember me as Kate Dunstalls (Canada) niece? I visited a few years ago, from Australia) and was really interested in the Museum and seeing my Grandfathers 'shell' donated years before. (Charles Dunstall) This is just to let you know I will be visiting Newhaven in August and intend to pop in to say hello!
