SAVAGE FAMILY HOLIDAY c1920'S

Hop picking in Kent

By Brian Urry

Every year my grandparents, who lived in Denton, packed up and went down to the hop fields in Kent for a working holiday. From this photograph it looks like they had a good time!

Grandad Savage is the chap in the bin, and the lady in the hat to the right is my grandmother Savage. The baby in arms is my mother.

How they got to Kent I don't know but knowing my grandfather they probably walked!! I should add that my grandmother was a Romany and had three children from a previous marriage ( George; Mary and Rose ) before she married my grandfather. My mother was the only child from that marriage. George is the boy in the hat on the right front of the picture. The second picture is of my mother at Newhaven beach. The third picture is of Granny Savage with daughter Mary taken about 81 years ago.

Comments about this page

This picture is of interest to my husband as Granny and Grandad Savage were his grandparents as well. His father was George Mitchell, who we understand took Granny Savage's maiden name. According to my husband and his sister Jean, Granny Savage apparently was a gypsy and according to tradition the eldest son took the mother's maiden name. My husband is Arthur Mitchell and he lived in South Road in Newhaven.

I went to school with your Husband Arthur. I lived by the memorial at the South Road end of Fort Road. He lived next door to "Tiger" Holden who's father was a dock policeman.

I hear a lot of stories about Arthur and Tiger. What naughty boys they were!

Its great to see these photo's. I have the last one of my Grandmother Mary Elizabeth Mitchell (Wiltshire) and her mother Harriet Savage. My Dad was Alf Wiltshire and I'm doing some research into this side of the family. If anyone has some information or stories about Harriet & Arthur Savage I would be very interested in hearing them.

I am trying to trace my father, George SAVAGE who used to Run a pub called the Prince of Wales in Holland Park, in London. Reading the comments on this page and looking at the photographs I think I may be related to some of the people shown. My Grand father was Ernie SAVAGE married to Nora VOCE. They had two children Roger SAVAGE and George SAVAGE both born In Warrington, (Hill Cliff) Lancashire (now Cheshire).

I do have old Photographs of my Grandfather’s Mother and Father who ran a farm in Hill Cliff and if there are links to the names I have given I would like to hear from you, especially if you have any knowledge of my father’s whereabouts. doodles6530@yahoo.co.uk.   Thankyou
