On the old riverside

The Blacksmiths Arms was to be found on the old riverside close to Denton Island Bridge. Note the "figurehead" on the top of the upturned Boat in the second photo. This boat was the Gents Toilet situated on the riverbank.

It closed as a pub about 1934 and then became a "mens boarding house".  It was demolished for the ring road.

I can remember my gran Emily Lipscomb taking me to feed the swans on the river bank outside the Blacksmith Arms. We walked through the blacksmiths in Robinsons Road, at the back of Elpick road from where she lived. She died when I was 7 years old and I am now 70 but I can Remember it as though it was yesterday. And I bet my Grandad was in the Blacksmith Arms, he liked a pint or two.
