CARNIVAL

Sussex Express Article - June 2013

By Carol Walton

This month’s photograph shows three well-known Newhaven residents dressed up for the carnival procession in 1963. From left to right: Burt Sexton, Albert Knights and Bob Hopper. The photo was taken in the goods yard on North Quay. The lamp-post apparently only lasted until Bonfire Night that same year when, after an evening spent by the trio in The Ark pub, it was ceremoniously launched into the river from the fishing stage opposite the pub - never to be seen again!

Uncle Albie lives again. In top hat and tails none the less. He looks very suave, and no doubt enjoyed a pint or three at the Ark. God bless him.
