DOWNS LAUNDRY FIRE.

In Meeching Road.

A view from the house opposite of the local volunteers at work - when the fire station was just along the road next to Saxonholme, where I gather history is about to repeat itelf.

As a child I used to love the smell of the laundry.

I was born in the flat above the laundry.

Mum would regularly send me to the laundry - either taking sheets down for cleaning or bringing them home, all neatly wrapped in brown paper and string. For a small young lad that was quite a hike from the top of Gibbon Road, along the whole length of Western Road and down Bay Vue Road.

I remember the fire, but can't recall the exact year. Mid 1960s, I think, but does anyone know the date?

I might be one of the kids in the first photo. I was amazed how close we were allowed to get. These days I'm sure they would have closed the road.

Can you have a guess at what year the fire was, Ron.

I think this could have been about 1965. the Bedford van in the first picture looks like mine and parked outside my grandfathers house.
