This photo was taken in Meeching Road, Newhaven in 1952.  It shows 8 of the 9 boys and 7 of the 9 girls born to my Gran and Grandad (Agnes and Edward Eager). The other 3 children died very young.

They had 18 children in all, and in addition they raised 2 adopted boys. All of the 18 children were born in the same house in Sefton Terrace, Denton Island. The Fludes Carpet Store stands on the site now.

The 'Eagers' were the largest and one of the most well-known familys in Newhaven.

FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY  - MR AND MRS EDWARD EAGER OF NEWHAVEN

A happy event was observed at 2 Denton Terrace, Newhaven on Friday, when Mr and Mrs Edward Eager celebrated their golden wedding.

Mr and Mrs Eager were married at Bishopstone Parish Church on 12 July 1879, by the Rev Charles H Dearsly, the then vicar. Mr Eager who is now 72 years of age, was the son of the late Mr Jerry Eager of Newhaven, a hawker of paregoric tablets and Barcelona nuts and a well-known character of his day.  Mrs Eager who celebrated her 69th birthday on her golden wedding day, is a daughter of the late Mr Alfred Nightingale, of Tide Mills, Bishopstone, who was a miller for Messrs Catt when the Tide Mills were in full work.

Mr and Mrs Eager are very robust and active for their age.  As a young man Mr Eager became a member of the Newhaven Lifeboat crew and for over seven years he was coxwain.  He is still working, being at present the assistant to the Trinity House Pilots of the port.  He also, occasionally does stevedoring at the North Quay.  Mrs Eager still carries out her household duties, including washing for ten persons.  They have had a family of 18 children, nine sons and nine daughters. 15 of the children are still living and all but 4 still reside in Newhaven.  In addition, they have brought up 2 adopted children, and they have 25 grandchildren.  With such a large family of children and grandchildren, the family gathering at their residence on Friday was naturally a large and happy one.  They were the recipients of many congratulations, and among the presents they received was a beautiful bouquet of various hued sweet peas to Mrs Eager from her friend Mrs N Browing.

I am wondering if the author of this article and my family are related, any chance of putting us in touch.

Was Bert Eager and his wife, who were running the "Flying Fish" pub in Denton related to this family?  We lived just round the corner in Lewis Close, 1967-1970.

Could Bob Eager post his grandfather's name, please.

My second Great Grandmother was Frances Eager born 1822 and died 8th December 1909. Her father was James Eager born 1795 - any connections with the Eager family from Denton Island or the Flying Fish?

I have also posted all of the above to the Message Board part of the site to continue the discussions. Jackie - Editor

I have only just seen the message from Albert!

My grandfather never actually came to the South Coast but his widow came with her 2 year old son (my father) and she lived in New Steine, Brighton, for many years. I suspect that was because there were Eager relatives there.

I have been told by my mother that there were also relatives around the Newhaven area but she cannot remember names at present (she is trying to!). Anyone is welcome to reply here.

We have recently purchased 22 Meeching Road, any more info on the house / family would be great.

22 Meeching Road was the family home of my Gran ("trot") Eager for many years and was my after-school haunt as a child, many happy memories for me. My parents are still local in Denton and my mum could provide you with loads of info if you are interested (and I can persuade her!)

If Jay would like to call in the museum any Saturday afternoon I can find many of the occupiers of 22 from 1881 up to the Eagers and possibly earlier from street directories/census/records. Pete

Could any one tell me the names of the two boys who were adopted by the Eagers please, because I have been informed that one of them could have been my grandad.

(1) Answer for Maureen Brown: Looking back on the family tree there was a Jemima Marten born 1829 who married Jeremiah Eager in 1847. One of their sons was James born in 1848 and another was Edward born in 1858. Edward was at one time coxswain of the Newhaven lifeboat. (2) Answer for Peter Flecknell: There were actually three boys who were fostered, not adopted, by Agnes and Edward Eager. Talking to an Eager family member, it is likely that the boys were sons of unmarried mothers who could not look after them and were raised by the Eagers, Agnes probably acting as a wet nurse.

I have just found this post written by my late grandad and it is very interesting finding out about my family.

Researching my maternal Grandmother and her family. This article (indeed whole website) is helping me greatly. My Grandmother's mother was Ann Jane Blann (ne Eager) b.circa 1867/8 - her father being Jeremiah Eager b.circa 1827/28 (once licensee of the Old Hope Inn and seller of cough tablets and nuts at local football matches) which makes me think ..same 'Jerry' Eager mentioned in article??

Irene, this is very strange - I can't find any record of Jeremiah having a daughter Ann.  He had two daughters, Emma and Jemima and two sons, James and Edward with wife Jemima. I believe he remarried, to Susannah and had two more daughters, Rosina and Amy. He was indeed a 'hawker of paregoric tablets and Barcelona nuts' and was a dockworker and fisherman.  His son Edward was my great grandfather.

Hi Carol - It is a bit confusing. There seems to be a couple of Jeremiah Eagers of around the same age and in the same area. I have the newspaper clipping article on Ann Jane Blann's (ne Eager) passing (at that time she lived at 26 Norton Terrace) - which has all the background information on her father Jerry being the licensee of the old Hope Inn. It cites amongst the mourners a Mrs R Knight of Brighton (sister), Mr & Mrs E Knight and Mr. P.V Knight of Brighton (nieces and nephews) and Mrs J.J. Browning (sister-in-law).

Jeremiah seems to have been a popular name in the Eager family.  My great great grandfather was Jeremiah (his father was also Jeremiah) and he married a Jemima Marten who I think died in childbirth.  He then married Susannah who was Ann's mother.  I don’t know much about Ann – my great grandfather was Edward and my grandfather was Frank.  I think the Mrs R Knight must have been Rosina, Ann’s sister.

Carol - mystery solved (possibly). Error in translation of speech or writing from the 1881 Census entry. Sometimes the writing for entries is quite tricky to read. I'm thinking it should read Ann J but looks like Amy and the J is there too. At 1871 Census Rosina was possibly with her uncle Edward Bussey - (but typed as Edmond Bassey on transcript pages) Bussey was Susan / Susannah's maiden name. All the ages match, all the relations and addresses match so it seems the most logical explanation - and errors in writing names was quite common.
