MARINE WORKSHOPS

By Carol Walton

October 2014's picture shows the interior of the marine workshops in the early 1900’s.

The engineering workshops were constructed in 1882 and until the early 1960’s were used to repair both train and ship engines.  The upper story was partly rebuilt during the mid-1940’s and the building was re-roofed in 1961.  During the war, in 1944, the building sustained some damage when a barge laden with munitions struck a mine outside the harbour. The listed building, having been empty for a number of years, will soon find new life as a University Technical College specialising in marine and environmental engineering.
