SOUTHDOWN SCHOOL
Sussex Express Article - May 2013

This month’s photo shows the original Southdown School buildings at the Church Hill site around 1988. The school was known by some of its pupils as the ‘sweat box’, owing to the high summer temperatures in the classrooms. The large number of windows caught the sun all afternoon. Built in the mid 1960’s, its steel skeleton was not up to the task and the buildings were condemned following a structural survey. The pupils and teachers moved into a set of portakabins while the current buildings were constructed.
