TWO SISTERS AT DIEPPE

Answer to Beatrice Lepierres

On the picture the cargo ship is either Nantes ( launched 1946) or Rennes (launched on 1949). Later on 1951 came Brest.

Before WWII there were four cargo ships on the Newhaven-Dieppe route: Portsmouth and Brest (1900), Bordeaux (1912) and Rennes (1925).

Rennes was launched on August 23 1925 and sunk in Dunkirk on May 28 1940. My grandfather was greaser on board and died with all the crew.

From 1972 to 1992 I was chief officer  and master on the Dieppe ships. In 1992 I joined the Dover-Calais route.
