BIRDS EYE VIEW OF NEWHAVEN HARBOUR
From North quay
By Denise Honeyball
This is a Birds Eye View of the Newhaven Harbour and the original Swing Bridge. There is Arundel - Newhaven ship on the Left side and might be the Paris on the Right. Also got some Clipper Ships in the distance. Plus the train at the end on the left is on the bridge.
Sorry to say I do not know the year this was taken.
A well known postcard view and one of a series taken at the same time. The date is circa 1905 and the steamers are indeed Arundel and Paris III. Down river from Paris is a Brest class 'Dieppe Screw' cargo ship, and the dredger Hercules is in midstream. The barges stretching out across the river are loaded with Welsh coal for the steamers. That berth was known as the 'coal wharf' for that reason. And the Sheet Loft is clearly seen on the West Quay. Andy-Editor
