DENTON ISLAND

Picture postcard from mid 1960's

By John Hills

In the picture, which dates from circa 1965, the red brick building of Fludes Carpets on the right and the long white roof in the centre belongs to the Ferguson Radio Corporation factory.

The four Catts Cottages the white building with red roof at the end of the old Denton Island bridge, has now been converted into one property and used as a light engineering works, which strangely was on different levels within the property.

The cottages were the last remaining original buildings left on the island and their demise came in the early 1970, when the old cottages were knocked down to make way for the new Island Bridge, linking the Island to the new one way road system which commenced in 1972.

The long grey building just over the centre of the old bridge is the main workshop of R. Lower and Son boat builders.
