DENTON VILLAGE 1960

Denton Road near the Flying Fish pub

By John Hills

The scene looking along Denton Road towards the Flying Fish probably dated around 1960.

We can see the electricity supply at this time was still on the overhead system, this was not removed and put underground till the late 1960's in this part of the village.

The wide scar running up the road was made when the new sewer system was installed by Mears Brothers contractors, a local resident recalls the sewer ran along Denton Road as far as the Flying Fish up Rectory Road a little way, then progressed through the Denton Hatchery property on to South Heighton Road a procecced further up the village pass Lewis Close, ready for the massive redevelopment of the village in the following years.

Just as I remember it John. My family moved to Denton in 1957 . At the top of the photo you can see the Planney which was our playground. I can remember the Mears men digging the trench in the road, I think they were mostly Irish.
