FREIGHTER DAYS
Memories of some of the Cargo Ships that called at Newhaven
By Derek Longly
The days a good many years back when it was a common sight to see a large cargo ship berthed at the seaward end of the East Quay now seem but a distant memory to me, both from the perspective of the time that has passed and also my present distance away from Newhaven.
Luckily I can call on memories of those times by way of the photos that I took of the ships from that era, many of which photos have only recently seen the light of day after being consigned to a box in the attic.
From the point of view of the port that must have been a profitable period with new warehousing constructed to house the goods that were off-loaded, especially fruit brought in by the reefers (refrigerated vessels). So I thought I would share my memories with all of you who have an interest in Newhaven harbour and the activities it once witnessed by placing my photos on the website.
As will be seen from these photos there was much variety in the types of ship that called, ranging from those belonging to British and European countries to those from the then Communist ruled East Germany and others that were aging and were operated under flags of convenience. Many called more than once and those of the Blue Star Line were always a fine sight with their big funnels displaying the company insignia and were usually maintained in excellent condition. I hope the pictures bring back equally good memories for you who visit this site as they do for me.
