HIGH STREET

Lower High Street 1870

Photo: Illustrative image for the 'HIGH STREET' page

One of the earliest photographs of the High Street we have found.

The shuttered shop on the left of the picture was a butcher's shop. The Bridge Hotel is pictured here before its roof line was altered when the first floor front bay window was reconstructed. The little building on the left edge of the Bridge Hotel is the Toll House where people paid to cross the Draw Bridge over to Denton Island, today it would standing in the middle of the road of one way system!

Also notice the gas street light on the righthand edge of the picture.
