Courtsey of Jenny White

Charlie White on the left with his mate who we think is Charlie Stone, sorting out the gas main in Meeching Road. The building to the left of the Memorial in the distance is Sussex Lodge.

This part of the road where they were working forms part of South Way, as in 1972 the house on the right of the picture in Meeching Road was demolished to make way for the new one-way system.

The Transport Memorial from WW1 in back ground was later moved and can now be found next to the Canadian Dieppe Raid Memorial on the green at the junction of Bridge Street and South Way.

The house at the right will be familiar to many Newhaven youngsters who learnt piano, as it was the home of Miss Margaret Moyes, one of the town's piano teachers. I went up and down those steps many times for my lessons before the house was demolished for the ring road construction. Miss Moyes then moved to Brighton Road, handy for me as it was only a two minute walk from home.

And that certainly does look like Charlie Stone.

Is that the same memorial that was in Chapel Street?

Hi Ron,  No not the same one; both memorials are now situated on the green at the junction of Bridge Street and South Way.
