WEST PIER LIGHT & CAPSTAN

West Pier Light and the famous Capstan

By John Hills

The West Pier light here pictured in May 1966, before we won the Football World Cup !

Over time it has quite few different types of building and contructions on this site to house the light including, I think, a wooden contruction in earlier times.

The Capstan can be seen front left, looks like it has just been freshly painted.

Wonder how people have had there picture taken in this spot.

One who has is the girl in the other picture, Mary Purslow age 18 from Dorset.

Have you anymore Capstan pictures in your collection ?

The Capstan now stands in the grounds at  Paradise Park garden centre in Newhaven.

When this photo was taken in 1966 my grandfather Frank Kemp was the lighthouse keeper. I have many happy memories of playing in the lighthouse.

My father was also a lighthouse keeper at this time, his name was Ben Dunstall. I remember spending happy times in this lighthouse.
