Selection of photos taken by my late husband in the 1980's

By Mrs Gwen Poulter

The first three photos are views looking down the pedestrianised precinct and the fourth is one of the shops.

The next five photos were taken from the footbridge (recently removed) which was over the ring road adjacent to Denton Island Bridge. The first of these photos shows the name of the Contractors who built the new Bridge to Denton Island, the next two are views taken during the construction of the new bridge to Denton Island. The fourth of these photos shows the new swing bridge already in operation and the fifth photo is a freighter being unloaded at North Quay.

A picture of the marina full of boats, and two ferries round off this little collection.

The coaster unloading at the North Quay is an old Newhaven 'regular', the Con Zelo. She ran here for many years under the command of a man known just as "Captain Tom".

The two ferries are our very own Senlac, leaving for Dieppe, passing the French vessel Cournouailles. She was only here for a while, so we can put this photo in 1984 or 1985.

I worked on the Con-Zelo in 1971 after demob from the RAF at the Marine Craft Unit near the harbour mouth.
Fond memories of many cross channel trips with Captain Tom. He was an old fishing boat captain. A rough diamond with a heart of gold and a liking for rum.

I used to live in the flats above Ben Funnel's bakery to the right of what used to be Woolworths.
