STENA ANTRIM - C1996

Views in and around the Harbour

By Laurie Stonehouse

The original name of this ship was the St Christopher, she was built in 1981 and served on the Dover - Calais route until 1990, she was then relocated to Stranraer for a further 5 years and renamed the Stena Antrim.  The Stena Antrim then served for around two years at Newhaven working along side the Parisien, and then briefly the Cambria. The Antrim is now working out of Tangier, and has been renamed again!, she is now called the Ibn Batouta.

Whilst this selection of pictures shows one of the "Ugly Duckling" style of modern ro/ro ferry, (and while I appreciate this was not how this ship was originally built), it does emphasize how increased capacity can be added during their service life if the design allows for it! At least the new Transmanche ferries were built to a larger size with modern styling to suit such ships, which would possibly render this exercise inappropriate.
