1930's and 1980's

Top two pictures of Newhaven Harbour taken from the swing bridge around 1930s.  See the sheer legs, with marine workshops on the East side.  On the West side is the sheet factory.

Bottom two pictures taken from similar position in 1984. Some of the former workshop buildings on the East Quay still remain to this day, however even since these pictures were taken the West Quay has changed significantly.

I remember seeing the later views every day on my way to work at Charringtons

I used to walk down to the bridge very often from Elphick Road to watch my dad sail out on the 'Sand Swift'. He always stood on the deck waving up to me. I later worked in Network Fisheries on the Western side of the river.

There used to be a little slipway up river of the bridge where a fishmonger sold fish from a hand cart.  I remember mum buying fish whilst I played at the water's edge, mid to late 1960's.
