NEWHAVEN PROGRAMME

Pre-war Guide to Newhaven

By Hazel Hills

Charlie Robinson wrote this booklet and gave it to my husband Wilf. It was issued by Newhaven Chamber of Commerce and published by Guild Press, High Street, Newhaven.  Somebody may know what date it was published by the shops that were trading then.

There's a VW Beetle in the photo and the its rear window looks too big to be one of the very early 'split' ones. That change happened in 1953. The steamer entering the harbour is the Worthing, so putting the two things together I'd say mid to late 1950's.

Can anyone put a date on this from the adverts?

You are correct Andy, when Heather and I were house hunting in 1960 the local estate agents always gave out a copy with their sales info. The rear window seen on the VW was used from 1953 to 1958.

Thanks Colin. I've just remembered that Worthing was sold in 1955, so we can date the picture to within 2 years, 53-55. As for the brochure, that does seem to be a little later.
