CRESTA MARINE

1963-65

By Bob Cobden

These photographs show the first generation pontoons built for the first yacht marina in the country, namely Cresta Marine Ltd of Newhaven. They were financed by a team of city bankers led by Henry Howard and under the management of John Thomas.

The pontoons and berthing arms were built in Newhaven Fort between 1963-65 and floated out and connect up at all hours during the day and night depending on the state of the tides.

The design and person responsible for  all the drawings of pontoons and connectors was undertaken by Ralph Wolton, an ex Isle of Man T.T. racer and ex Battle of Britain pilot who lived at the lower end of Gibbon Road at the time.
