NEWHAVEN SWING BRIDGE

Preparing for the flyover

By Ginny Smith and Richard Beckett

The top two photos were taken just before the construction of the new bridge. The Swing bridge which replaced the one shown in the photos, was not constructed until after the building of the Flyover The third photo, taken in 1999 shows a small hut situated at the Denton end of the bridge. This hut which stood at the entrance to the East Quay can also just be seen in the second photo on the far right. Believed to have been where "casual labour" registered when they booked in to work loading or unloading boats, also another photo seen in Newhaven Museum, shows a Railway Police Constable standing at the hut whilst on duty checking workmen in and out of the docks.
