The Gasworks and Gasholder in the eastside area (also known as Turkey Town)
part of aerial photograph
An old East-sider once told me that sometime during the first war (1914-1918) a train load of turkeys was left overnight in a siding near East Side and in the morning most of the turkeys had disappeared. Then mysteriously a couple of days later most houses in the area had Turkey for dinner (which is how the area got its nickname). Is this true or false?
I hope so its a great story.
I believe that East Side, Newhaven was also nicknamed 'Monkey Island'!
