A scene long gone

Richard Beckett

Photo 1. shows a view looking upriver from the fort. Note the railway line not only curving around sleepers hole but also continuing alongside the river. At one time this part of the track actually crossed a bridge at the entrance to Sleepers hole. Also on the far side of the river behind the boats tied up at railway Quay, it is possible to make out the London & Paris Hotel.

Photo 2. Is a similar (but closer) view of the Continental Quay.

Photo 3. Denton island with the rows of terraced houses.

Photo 4. Part of an aerial view showing on the far bank, the Sheerlegs & The Marine Workshops, while on the near bank can be seen the Sheetworks where the tarpaulins were made & repaired which were used to cover Railway Wagons.
