NEWHAVEN DEEP SEA ANGLERS

Brian Urry published a copy of the menu for that occasion and here is a photo taken there.  The lady holding the Waller bream cup is Mrs May Pottinger and the smug little devil preparing to receive it is me.  Just behind my head is my Dad.  You can tell it's a special occasion as Dad has a glass of Mackeson in front of him, normally he only had a Mackie at Christmas.

May Pottinger was a doughty angler, who fished with her husband Tony, on their boat "My May".  Dad once said that she could catch fish from a freshly drawn bucket of water.

These were great and enjoyable get-togethers, made all the more fascinating by watching Dad have a couple of dances with the St. Dunstans nurses who, with some of the residents, were a delight to watch on the dance floor.  (Dad didn't do too bad either.)

This is my auntie May,  She used to deliver bread each morning around the houses in Seaford. My husband's gran brought May up from a baby and he remembers the bread being hot and thinks it was about 1947.

Celia, your Auntie May is a legend amongst the anglers. Liz Bowra discovered a gold coin in a whiting she caught, and this was widely known, but May was the person the male anglers always envied.

Whenever we located near Tony & May while fishing, Dad would give the usual hail of "How's your luck?" Tony's reply was usually dismissive with a rider of the huge amount of fish May had caught.

She fished with us on the Ethel, once and never stopped hauling fish in.  As well as being a talented angler, May is a thoroughly nice person who helps anyone. I do hope she's still around, as the world will be a poorer place without her.

Sadly Aunt May went to a better place a long time ago now.
