FREIGHTERS IN PORT

Views from the 1980's

By Michael Cutler

These are photos of some of the larger cargo vessels that frequented Newhaven from the 1970's onwards, discharging their cargos at Fisher's Terminal on the East Quay.

The first two are Shaw Savil Line's Deseado and Darro, that used to be regulars with their twin sisters Durango and Drina. The third is the Abulmeda.

The bottom two are the impressive Hardwicke Grange and Blue Star Line's lovely Gladstone Star. The Blue Star ships were a very regular sight.

These photos most likely come from the 1980's, when the visiting ships had become larger. When the harbour ceased to be dredged so regularly, there was no longer enough depth of water water for them to come in.
