T E Singlehurst ran the butcher's shop in the group of shops at the corner of Gibbon Road and Southdown Road for many years.

I can remember Singlehurst's butchers very clearly, often being sent up to get various cuts of meat, sausages and the like. He had a son Michael, who was at school with me for a while.

I can also remember the other shops there, Jaines the newsagents, VG Stores the grocers, and the off-licence.

It was originally the fish and chip shop run by the Swaizland family (not sure of spelling). They lived on the North side of Southdown road in the flats, I went to school with their eldest daughter.
