FORT ROAD / HARBOUR - 1880 TO 2009

Views from the Fort

By Laurie Stonehouse

The following pictures were all taken from the road that leads up to the Newhaven Fort main entrance.  The first picture postcard is from 1880; the Sheffield Arms has yet to be built - this local landmark was constructed in 1891 and can be seen in the remaining photographs.

The top photo is interesting in that it shows a large building south of where the Sheffield is. Maps of the 1870s show the Sheffield as being on the site of the flats between Quarry Rd & Gibbon Rd. It is also recorded in the census of 1881. The Sheffield as we know/knew it is a later rebuild as shown by the date on the front. Pete
