Newhaven/Dieppe cross channel ship

I would like to have a photo of the SS Brighton which was in operation before WW2.   My late Father, Reg Voice, worked at the Marine Office at Newhaven Harbour all his working life as did my Grandfather, Albert Voice.   An uncle of mine was a crew member of the SS Brighton. Hoping someone can assist, as my family were all from Newhaven.

This would probably be the Brighton V. A very handsome looking ship.

I don't think we have any photos of her on this site, though I haven't checked fully. In any case, we would not be able to provide you with a copy.

Post cards of Brighton V and Brighton VI, (and many other vessels) are available at the Newhaven Local & Maritime Museum, or go to the Museum Website http://www.newhavenmuseum.co.uk/ and choose the Shop section where they can be ordered by post, or they can also be ordered at the Newhaven Historical Society's bi-monthly meetings at the Hillcrest Centre, Newhaven .

I have an original watercolour painting of the TSS Brighton, dated 1940 - is this the ship you are referring to? My Grandfather, Roly Burr was chef on this ship.

I had a look at the Museum website as I was interested in the possibility of buying some postcards of the ships but there is no 'Shop' mentioned. Has this service ceased?

I'm pretty certain it ceased when the website was changed last year. I'm sure they will update the site in time (there's a proposal from me on the table) and that will restore things. In the meantime, an email to them should get you some details.

The Brighton IV was sunk during the Dunkirk evacuation in June 1940. My Father in Law, Arthur Kennard was a crewman at the time. One seaman was lost and his war grave is in the Telscombe village church yard. I try to visit it whenever I am over from Canada. I have several pictures of her, a fine, fast ship.

Boy oh boy I made a big mistake. My previous comment should have referred to the "Paris IV" not the Brighton. Sorry about that. The history of the cross channel ships is so interesting and Peter Bailey was the author of a book on them.
