In the third photograph, is the F. Davies the same person as Fred Davies who played for Peacehaven in the late forties and is in the photograph of the Peacehaven team? I wonder what Ernie Robinson thinks, as Fred Davies was our uncle.

I believe F. Davies, far right in third picture, is my uncle Fred. If so, he married Dorothy Robinson and I remember them living in the east end of Peacehaven. Many is the Sunday afternoon the family would walk over The Highway to visit them and then catch the bus back to Newhaven.

Nice to see a photo of my (great) Uncle Henry (Amy) in the first photo. He and his brother Phil ran a coal business and the Esso garage at the top of the High Street. Phil was team manager of Newhaven FC. My father, Ken Wilson, was a regular player in the 1950s.

It's great to see George Lower and Bob Lowles (photo 1). They are a blast from the past. We lived at 9 Lewes Road, George at 7 and Bob at 5. That was in the 1950s and 60s. My Dad worked with both of them at Oxley and Bennett. George was a good all round sportsman; not only football and cricket, to a high standard, but in later life, he also played bowls and golf. Nice bloke too.

Joe Geering is my nan Rosemary's brother. I think his brothers, Jack, Len and Geoff also played football.

In the first photo is my Dad Bill Winder known as Windy along with his life-long friend Bluey (sp?) Simmons. I think the Kennedy is Son who married Dolly Moon the sister of Percy who married Bill's sister Kath Winder who recently passed away at the grand age of 96. Our family spent many holidays in Newhaven and I remember meeting a Len Flowers so is this a relation? My father, after the family moved to Ilford, Essex played for Ilford FC in the Isthmian League and had trials with a First Division club but the Second World War interrupted what may have been a professional career but not his playing. He played for the RAF Regiment and even managed a few games for Ilford when he was on leave! He later played for Downshall and continued to play cricket for them into his sixties. Downshall played cricket against Newhaven at the Rec in the sixties and I believe my brother David along with our late cousin Keith Moon played for Loxford FC against a Newhaven club(?) in the early seventies. There are still Winders in Newhaven! Does anyone know when they first arrived in Newhaven as I would like to track down my ancestors before my Grandfather William who at one time lived in Elphick Road.

Hi ya! My aunt was the one who commented above as in regards to the first photo with my grandfather William Winder. I have photos of more of his teams and would like to make them available to this site. Please contact me and I can get you a copy. I am over in the U.S. And am so excited to have stumbled across this site.

We could add them if you simply email them to us, but you could simply sign up to the site, and create your own page, with the photos and your memories. It's easy to do and won't take long. Andy-Editor

Hello, I have been completing my family tree and stumbled across this. The Winder side of my family is also from Newhaven. Would William (Bill) Winder be son of Albert Earl Winder and Elizabeth Jaycocks with a brother of Francis Winder (my great grandad)
