NORTH QUAY / DENTON ISLAND

1909 / 2009

By Laurie Stonehouse

A Hundred years separate these pictures, the improvements shown here are quite remarkable. The single dirt track road that snaked it's way around the old Riverside is now a very busy road with hundreds of vehicles converging here at the junction, and the majority crossing the modern swing bridge.

In the background is the corner of Denton Island with a section of Sefton Terrace in view while over to the right is a very busy North Quay with a cluster of cranes loading and unloading ships.

My Mum was born on Denton Island circa 1905, the eldest of umpteen children and her Dad  worked on the construction of the breakwater. In later years I spent many happy hours swimming from the old Denton Island Bridge.
