CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL, 2008

South Way

By Joanna Balcombe

The building facing Meeching Road was the Sunday School and added later.  Originally, there was a gap between the Chapel itself and the terraced houses alongside.

In the recent past it was used for storage for Vacco (a local vacuum flask factory) and then as a flea/antique market.

The market closed down in 2007 and the building is now unused.

As a boy, along with other rascals we would go into the basement of the church during services because a friend was in there keeping the pump going for the organ. This was a manual pump and we always managed to disrupt the flow of air by distracting the poor victim into easing up on the pump. Much annoyance ensued from above but we were long gone by then!

Lovely memory Jack! Can you let us know what year this may have been. Jackie, Editor

The above event took place around 1949 and I cannot remember who the other participants were.
