LOOKING NORTH TOWARDS THE OLD BRIDGE

By John Sweatman

In the time before the cranes were replaced - these were still on the rails. Between two of them you can see the "red" gas light which warned that the bridge was closed to shipping. The Bridge carried the gas main from the gasworks on East side to the town, and so the gas pressure dropped to virtually nil when the bridge was open - usually before Sunday lunch I seem to remember being told!
