RNLB KEITH ANDERSON

A shout during mid August 1989

By Jonathan Holden

A series of photos taken one day during mid August 1989, as usual during the day I was around the Station when a call came in that a Yacht was in trouble, as I had my camera with me, I photographed the launch.  The latter photos were taken much later that evening, as I can remember it was a long and slow tow back in, I had gone back to our caravan on Rushey Hill and was listening to the progress on our VHF scanner.  When they were back within sight of the harbour, I walked along the cliffs from Peacehaven back towards Newhaven and took the final couple of photos.  You can see the Pilot boat who was waiting to assist if needed.

Crewmember Nick Gentry on the fore deck, 2nd Coxswain 'Paddy' Boyle at the helm on the flying bridge, Assistant Mechanic Brian Ashdown crossing the pontoon to board, passing crew members Chris Bird and Chris Delaney on the pontoon, with launchers Michael Moore and 'Barny' ready to let the lines go. The length of towline was to stop 'snatching' and causing excessive strain on the casualty, with the loop or bight of the towline actually being in the water. Nice shot of the Colonel Templar in the background and what I am assuming is some kind of dredger in the harbour approaches. Andy can probably tell us more.

IIRC, that's part of the floating pipeline used by the large dredger used to rebuild Seaford beach. - Andy, Editor.

Rob, if I can remember I'm sure that it was you on the pontoon with Chris Delaney.

It could well be, as I don't think Birdie had yellow foul weather gear. I didnt think I had that much hair.

Rob, I've looked again at the photos and it is definitely you on the pontoon. I can also remember you saying that you didn't mind missing the shout as you had been on one either the same day or the day before.
