EAST SUSSEX FIRE BRIGADE STATION

By Guy Bowes

I am trying to put together a history of the Fire Service in East Sussex in photographs. I live in Newhaven but only have a few photos from here and any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is on land behind the North Quay.

He might not know where the North Quay is Andy.

Guy, the North Quay was the industrial quayside north of the bridge on the east side of the river away from the main townsite of Newhaven. I think Andy will confirm that this was probably a temporary station set up during the last war to provide fire cover in the event that access over the bridge was blocked for some reason. Andy, during the war was the main station in the council offices on Fort Road or up near the town centre on Meeching Road?

There certainly was a temporary fire station on the North Quay during WWII. My Dad was in the Auxiliary Fire Service for the early part of the war and was based there, IIRC.

I will check, but I think the Fire Station was in the old Kinema in Meeching Road at the time.
