I happened upon another of Newhaven's iconic locations literally going up in flames. The blaze stated at approx 1. 50am. I hope no-one was injured.
What a crying shame we have to lose our Con Club in such a dreadful way. We are just glad no one was hurt. Does anyone know how old it was?
How many wedding receptions were held there over the years? My first one was held there but my grandfather refused to go because he was a staunch labour supporter. Families, love 'em.
Some good photos taken that day. BUT I am puzzled by the water jet in photo 2. How is it managing to curve UPWARDS unless there was a strong updraft from the heat of the flames.
Richard, the fire was almost out when got there (about 6 am), the fire brigade were still seriously damping down though, the building smouldered for the rest of the day. In photo 2 (taken on my phone camera by the way), the fireman was moving the hose downwards, hence the apparent upward movement of the water.
How sad the Con Club has been destroyed. Went to many 'do's' there over the years.
It is sad that the Con club has gone. I went to many do's there.
My brother and I went to Newhaven as tourists in October 2011 and the ruin was still there. It's not good PR for the Conservatives to let the ruins stand there for so long.
