57 High Street
By Laurie Stonehouse
The following pictures show the Arrow Tyres Fire incident from 19th July 1976, the building was completely destroyed. There were four Newhaven ambulances in attendance - one vehice was present throughout the day and late into the night.
Three firemen and one employee were injured and taken to hospital, several firemen were overcome by smoke. The stench of burnt tyres from this fire hung in the air for many days, the last picture taken from Southdown School shows the extent of the smoke that engulfed the town.
Many thanks to Mr H Loveless who has donated these pictures, Mr Loveless was in command of the Newhaven Ambulance Station from 1971 - 1989.
