NORTH QUAY AND SLIPWAY

Looking north from the old bridge

By John Hills

The picture was taken from the small slipway and hard, looking north, which was used by small boats for mooring & light maintainance works in the 1950/60's.

As a nipper I remember playing on this slipway whilst my mum bought fish from a man with a fishbarrow. Looks like a nasty hole on the side of the nearest boat.

Interesting old  picture from the 1960's era. Unfortunately this view is now overshadowed by the 'Growing Incinerator Project' to the north of the old cranes shown in this picture. It was a more sedate period in Newhaven prior to the construction of the ring road and the replacement of the old swing bridge. The side-effects of all these changes are still being felt to this day as Newhaven traders know only too well .

Can anybody tell me when the railway ceased going to the North Quay, it's for a project I'm doing on the railway at Newhaven.
